Katherine was born about 1918 in New York.¹ Katherine's father was Deforest DeAlton Wheeler and her mother was DeEtta Belle Hyde. Her paternal grandfather was Albert M Wheeler and her paternal grandmother is Josephine Durham; her maternal grandparents were Henry Noah Hyde and Mary Ann Seaton. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Noah, Albert Raymond, Doris Adell Taplin, Rosie and Kathyrn M. She is the youngest of the six children.
