Bual J was born in June 1899 in North Carolina.¹ Bual J's father was John J Roberson and his mother was Delia Martha Gilreath. His paternal grandfather was John Roberson and his paternal grandmother is Amelia Williams. He had seven brothers and eight sisters, named Mansfield V, Mansfield B, John Parke, Berl J, William Glen, Reed, Mayford, Isabella, Sarah A., Dora Victoria, Gertrude, Sarah Bertha, Londy D, Lundey L and Lestie M.
