Mary's father was John Ives and her mother was Sarah Etheridge. Her paternal grandparents were John Ives and Eliza Ives ?; her maternal grandparents were Edward Etheridge and Elizabeth Townsend. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Luke, Thomas, Elenor, Elizabeth and Sarah.
