Susan Agnes Carroll

  • Merriola said that Susan's father was Thomas Carroll.  Where she came from is unknown at this time (9 Nov 1991). Other notes from Merriola indicate that Grandmother Sue's brother was Francis Lafayette Carroll and his nickname was Frank. Sue's first marriage was to Nathaniel Lee. He died at Sugartown of injuries, exposure, etc. received in the Civil War. He had escaped from the Northern soldiers and prison near Lake Charles. After he died, our great grandmother Sue and her 3 children (Nonie, Osa (Osceola), and Ed) finally hitched a ride with a neighbor in a wagon back to our great grandfather's plantation near Mansfield, Louisiana where our grandfather lived with his mother's father until he was 15 years old. Then his mother advised him to go to Beaumont to the Carrolls and seek work in the lumber business. She then married a Smith, name & details unknown.
    Further research reveals that Susan Agnes Carroll Lee Smith is buried in plot at Leesville Cemetery with her son O.L. Lee, daughter-in-law Alice May Alsobrooke Craig Lee, daughter Nonie Lee Glover, and her granddaughter Velma Sweaney.
