Richard Butler

Richard was born in 1400 in Knocktopher Castle,Arklow,Wicklow,Ireland.¹ Richard's father was James Butler and his mother was Anne Wells. His paternal grandparents were James Butler and Elizabeth Darcy. He had two brothers named Ralph and James. He was the youngest of the three children. He died at the age of 5 in 1405 in Polestown,,Kilkenny,Ireland.¹

  Sir Richard Butler (b.1395-c.1443) was the second son of James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormond, and younger brother of James Butler, 4th Earl of Ormond.
  
  Richard was born at Kilkenny Castle and was named in honour of the visiting King Richard II, who had joined his cousin, James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormond to campaign against the Irish. Richard lived at Polestown Castle and went against the Statutes of Kilkenny by marrying Catherine, the daughter of Irishman Gildas O’Reilly, Lord of East Breifne.

  By his wife he had several children, the eldest of whom adopted the Gaelic title of MacRichard of Ossory.
