Samuel was born in 1747 in Valley, Miesbach, Bayern, Germany.  Samuel's father was George Phillip Hoffman and his mother was Katerina Rein.  His paternal grandparents were Hans Georg Hoffman and Priscilla Hoffman; his maternal grandparents were Rein and Mary Rein. He had three brothers and three sisters, named George, Martin T, Balthazar, Catherine, Elizabeth and Elizabeth Betsy.  He died at the age of 63 in May 1810 in Henry River, Burke, North Carolina, USA.
