Alfred was born in 1874 in Perry Barr Handsworth. Alfred's father was Charles Henry Mead(e) and his mother was Rosetta Bishop.  His paternal grandparents are John Mead(es) and Mary Ann. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Arthur, Frank, Walter, Charles, Annie, Rose, Lucy Harriet, Clara and Lilly. He had a half-brother named Thomas Henry.  He died at the age of 74 in 1948 in Lichfield.
