Robert was born in 1748 in Llandrillo.  Robert's father was Rowland Griffith and his mother was Catherine Gabriel.  His maternal grandparents are Gabriel Pugh and (Mother). He had four brothers and four sisters, named Griffith, Thomas, David, Gabriel, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane and Mary.  He is the fourth oldest of the nine children.
