Samuel was born in 1734.  Samuel's father was John Crompton.  His paternal grandparents were Abraham Crompton and Elizabeth Bourne. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Abraham, John, Joseph, Edmund, Hannah, Margaret, Mary and Rebecca.  He is the second oldest of the nine children.
