Rachel Johanna was born on August 4th, 1923. Rachel Johanna's father was Pieter Gerhadus Louw van Blerk and her mother was Johanna Beukes (van Blerk). Her paternal grandparents were Jacobus Adrijan Rozier van Blerk and Rachel Johanna Zeeman (van Blerk). She had six brothers and five sisters, named Jacobus Adriaan Rozier, Johannes Jacobus Petrus, Pieter Gerhadus Louw, Johannes Jacobus Petrus, Simon Petrus, Tobias Johannes Nicholas, Martha, Johanna Jacoba Elizabeth, Jacomina Hendrina, Hester Helena and Esther Helena.
