Uma's father was Late Rama Shankar (Putun) Awasthi Badarka and her mother is Awasthi.  Her paternal grandparents are Late Shiv (Putana) swaroop Awasthi (Putanna) and Awasthi. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Jugal Kishore, Kamal Kishore, Late Aanand Kishore, Kusum and Saroj.
