John was born on February 6th, 1858 in Marylebone, Middlesex, England.1   John's father was Thomas HOWLETT and his mother was Hannah REYNOLDS.  His maternal grandparents were Henry REYNOLDS and Mary CLARKE. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Henry Thomas, Charles, Thomas, Alfred, James, Matilda, Jessie and Emily.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
