Joseph was born in 1816 in Eynsham, Oxfordshire.  Joseph's father was Edward GARDNER and his mother was Susanna SMITH. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Charles, James, Benjamin, Edward, Alice, Ann and Susanna.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
