Mary was born in 1875 in Linton, Kent.  Mary's father was James BUDGEN and her mother was Sarah SMYTHERMAN.  Her maternal grandparents were Stephen SMYTHERMAN and Harriet MAY. She had a brother and two sisters, named James, Ellen and Julia.  She was the second youngest of the four children.
