Henry was born in 1856 in Clapham, Surrey.  Henry's father was William Strutt and his mother was Emma Jane Lenham.  His paternal grandparents were William Strutt and Sarah; his maternal grandparents were James Lenham and Mary Ann Brail. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, George, Mary, Emma, Susan and Nellie.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
