Edith was born in 1879 in Paddington, London.  Edith's father was James Ratty and her mother was Jane Elizabeth George.  Her maternal grandparents were William Henry George and Jane Bardall. She had five brothers and a sister, named James, Albert, Ernest, William, Charles and Mable.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
