Alexander was born in 1720 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.1   Alexander's father was John Swan and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) McCrossin. He had four brothers named Gustavus, William, John and Jeremiah.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 49 on January 3rd, 1769 in Peterborough, Hillsborough, New Hampshire.1
