William was born in 1839.  William's father was William Armstrong and his mother was Sarah R Patterson.  His maternal grandparents are James Patterson and <Unknown>. He had three sisters named Annabella, Sarah and Priscilla.  He was the second youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Rachel.  He died at the age of 83 in 1922.
