Thomas was born on September 10th, 1816 in Shelburne, Nova Scotia.  Thomas' father was Thomas Spinney and his mother was Margaret Coffin.  His paternal grandparents were John Spinney and Susan Snow. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Hiram, Sarah, Flavilla and Susanna.  He was the oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Samuel, Lavinia, Maria and Polly.
