On June 8, 1775, Anthony Swartwout, senior, Anthony Swartwout Junior and Jacobus Swartwout were signers of the pledge of association, at Goshen, Orange, County, New York. Among the persons named at that time as exempt from military service was Anthony Swartwout senior and Jacobus Swartwout. Anthony Swartwout Jr., was enrolled as living then in Blooming Grove District. On May 10, 1784, Anthony Swartwout, yeoman, and Mary his wife, of the precinct of Goshen, conveyed to David Mapes for 1,200 ounds "all that Tractor Parcel of Land, situated, lying and being in the county of Orange aforesaid, aand Part and Parcel of a large Tract of thirteen hundred and twenty acres, surveyed by Nenjamin Stevens, between the eighteenth and thritieth days of October, in the yearseventy," containing 200 acres. Book of Deeds, D. pp. 82,83, in the office of the clerk of Orange County, New York, in Goshen. In 1788 Anthony Swartwout, juniot, moved to Ovid, Montgomery County, New York and settled on lot 94 of the military tract, on which in 1865-1869 Willard Asylum was built. His body was buried near the shore of Lake Seneca, not far from the site of the asylum. At the first town meeting, on April 1, 1794, Anthony Swartwout,senior, was elected one of the overseers of roads and John Swartwout, one of the fence viewers. A memorial of the inhabitants, living between Lake Seneca and Cayuga, presented the legislature of the state of New York, on June 27, 1795, reciteds that the petitioners settled there in 1788. Among the twenty names of electors in the town of Romulus, posessing freeholds of the value of 100 pounds, are those of Anthony, Barnardus, John. and Nathaniel Swartwout
