Gottfried I Of was born in Verdun, Meuse, Lorraine, France.  Gottfried I Of's father was Baudouin Count Flanders and his mother was Mathilde Von Sachsen.  His paternal grandparents were Arnoul Arnulf I the Great Count Of FLANDERS and Adaele Alice Alix De VERMANDOIS; his maternal grandparents were Herman Billung and Hildegarde De Westerbourg. He had sixteen brothers and twelve sisters, named Arnold, Jean, Jean, Gozelon I of Lower, Arnulf The, Herman, The, Gothelo I the Great of, Gonzelon I Of, Hermann Count Of, Jean, Friedrich St The Pilgrim Count of, Frederick, Frederick de, Geonzelon, Jean de, Bertha Countess Of, Adelheid of, Gerberge De, ADELAIDE, Regilla de, Ermentrude de, Ermentrude d, Regilla, Irmgard de, Bonne, Gerberge of and Maud of. He had six half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Arnold, Jean, Jean de, The, Gonzelon I Of, Friedrich St The Pilgrim Count of, Bertha Countess Of, Ermentrude d, Ermentrude de, Gerberge De and Regilla de.  He died on August 11th, 1023.
