James was born in 1862.  James' father was John James Larkin and his mother was Nancy Jane Diamond.  His maternal grandparents were John Diamond and Jane McNeil. He had two sisters named Mary and Zerah.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had two half-sisters named Minnie and Bernice.
