Thomas was born in 1850.  Thomas' father was Chrisopher Skirls and his mother was Caroline Sharpe. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, Peter, James and Carrie.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named John, Thomas, Frederick, George, F, Sarah and Elizabeth .  He died at the age of 91 in 1941.
