  • Individual Note: MILITARY: State of Tennessee, Sumner County, Aug term of County Court for said county 1832. On this the 15th day of August 1832 personally appeared in open court William Bell . . .aged seventy three years . . .doth make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. States that he was born in the County of Rowan in the State of North Carolina in the year 1759 - He has a record of his age, which is to be found in the family Bible of his father now in his possession at his residence one mile and a half North East from the town of Gallatin in the County of Sumner in the state of Tennessee - At the time he was called into service he was living in the county of Rowan in the state of North Carolina, from which place he removed to the county of Sumner in the state of Tennessee in the year 96 where he has since lived and now lives. He volunteered for the term of five months in a company commanded by Capt Jacob Nichols, and marched to the city of Charlestown in the state of South Carolina, the regiment to which he was attached was commanded by Col. Frank or Francis Lock and the Briggade by General Rutherford. After Charlstown was taken by the enemy and the term for which he had first volunteered to serve had expired, a regiment of men was raised by Col. Davy to protect the country against frequent depredations of the tories to which regiment he was attached by having volunteered his services - His company was commanded by Capt David Caldwell. The Lieut. Col. Was Brisbane . . . He received a discharge for the two months service - a few months before the expiration of the five months tour when he marched to Charlston his brother Andrew Bell took his place - whether his brother procured a discharge or not he is unable to say - . . .He refers to Parson Richard Johnsen who has been acquainted with applicant for about twenty years and Thomas Anderson Esquire, who has known him for 30 years, to testify as to his character for morality . . He hereby relinquishes every claim to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the roll of the agency any state - signed: Wm Bell PROBATE: Sumner county, Tennessee wills, bk.3, p.120. In the name of God Amen. I William Bell of the county of Sumner and State of Tennessee, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make and ordain this my last will and testament - In manner following viz. I give my soul to God who gave it and my body to Christian Burial in belief of a resurrection at the last day. And with regard to the worldly goods that I have been blessed with in this life, I give and bequeth as follows, to wit, First, it is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid out of personal estate, by my executors herein after named. Secondly, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Sarah Bell my tract of land and plantation on which I now live with all its hereditaments and appurtenances thereto belonging or in any wise appertaining, at her own disposal after my death and to be used and disposed of by her, at her pleasure and by her to be given or sold or in any other manner she may wish free from any restraint whatsoever. I likewise give and bequeath unto my said wife my negro boy Jim together with all my stock of horses, cattle, hogs and sheep that I have or may be in possession of at my decease. Also all my household or kitchen furniture including all my books. Also I give and bequeath unto my said wife all my farming utensils of every description together with all my money on hand and all debts coming to me, either in notes or book amounts. In short all the propety both real and personal of what kind or description soever to her my said wife absolutely to be by her disposed of and used in any manner she may think proper, reserving out a sufficiency from her use and control to pay my just debts and funeral expenses as aforesaid. And lastly I nominate and appoint my two sons Robert Bell and John Bell executors of this my last will and testament - hereby revoking all others by me thertofore made.
