William was born on February 21st, 1831 in Sandymoss, Duffus, Morayshire.  William's father was John Laing and his mother was Elspet Cobban.  His paternal grandparents were John Laing and Margaret Junkin; his maternal grandparents were John (Ernest) Cobban and Elspeth Sandison. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Elspet and Margaret.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 73 in 1904 in 69 Granary St, Burghead.
