James was born on September 15th, 1844 in Drainie, Lossiemouth, Morayshire, Scotland.  James' father was Alexander Anderson and his mother was Margaret McIntyre.  His paternal grandparents were William Anderson and Marjory Adam; his maternal grandparents were Donald (Hugh) McIntyre and Elspet James. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, Hugh, Alex, Alexander, Robert, David, Marjory and Elspet.  He was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
