Jaak was born in 1851.  Jaak's father was Tõnis Sahhar and his mother was Mari Sahhar (Mikkit) (Ilves).  His maternal grandparents were Toots and Margret Ilves. He had a brother and a sister, named Juhan and Eva.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had two half-sisters named Mari and Mari.
