Liis was born in November 1866 in Arula, Laane.  Liis' father was Jaan Volmer and her mother was Mall Volmer (Rekand).  Her paternal grandmother was Anu Volmer. She had a brother and five sisters, named Hans, Katri, Lilli, Anna, Miili and Juuli.  She was the second oldest of the seven children. She had two half-sisters named Salme and Rosalie.  She died at the age of 49 in 1915.
