August was born in 1903.  August's father was Hindrik Brikker and his mother was Leena Brikker (Treial).  His paternal grandparents were Jaan Brikker and Triin Brikker (Lohk). He had three brothers and three sisters, named Karla, Rudolf, Johannes, Natalie, Ida Rosalie and Pärja.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
