Jan was born in 1787 and his christening took place on October 21st, 1787 in Gouda.  Jan's father was Cornelis Spruit and his mother was Cornelia Oostenrijk van. He had a brother and a sister, named Hendrik and Maria.  He was the youngest of the three children.
