Jan was born on July 9th, 1779 in Roelofarendsveen and his christening took place there on July 9th, 1779.  Jan's father was Theodorus Cornelisse (Dirk) Spruijt and his mother was Pieternel Pieters Geer van der.  His paternal grandparents were Cornelis Sijmonsz Spruijt and Maritje Jansse (Maartje) Suijdervaart. He had eight brothers and six sisters, named Pieter, Petrus, Petrus, Cornelis, Pieter, Cornelis, Cornelis, Pieter, Martje Dirkse, Margareta, Grietje, Grietje, Lijpje and Grietje.  He was the twelfth oldest of the fifteen children.
