Maria was born on December 17th, 1866 in Rockanje.  Maria's father was Andries Plooster and her mother was Suzanna Langendoen. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Kornelis, Leendert, Leendert, Arentje, Andries, Kommer, Pietertje, Pietertje, Kornelia and Bouwelina.  She was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
