David's father was Johan\John Philip , Sr. Harless and his mother was Anna Margaretha Preisch\Price\Preiss.  His paternal grandparents were Ferdinand Harless and Anna Christina Volger; his maternal grandparents are David Price and Agnes Hoffman. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John Philip, Henry, Edmund Emmaunel, Johan\John Martin, Mary Dorothy and Margarette\Margaretha.
