Hester was born on August 18th, 1934.  Hester's father was Andreas Bernardus Fritz and her mother was Elzie Johanna Wolmarans.  Her paternal grandparents were Roelof Josephus Johannes Fritz and Hester Maria Terblanche. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Roelf, Gabriel, Andreas, George, Nicolas, Willemiena, Elsie and Catharina.  She is the third oldest of the nine children.
