David's father was George Katona and his mother was Ruth Eleanor Gillam (Katona).  His paternal grandparents were George Katona and Mary Esterhasy (Katona); his maternal grandparents were Daniel Jay Gillam and Sarah Drake McAlvay. He has two brothers and a sister, named Michael, Paul and Mary.
