Manuel was born in 1755 in Durango.  Manuel's father was Miguel Labayen (Alquibar) and his mother was Maria  Mardaras  (Zupitu Urrutia).  His maternal grandparents were Andres Mardaras (Asla) and Josepha Urrutia (Lopategui).  He was an only child.
