Kalman was born on February 5th, 1895 in Winnipeg, MB.  Kalman's father was Leon Abramovitch and his mother was Hinda Pierce. He had a brother and three sisters, named Jerry, Sarah, Rose and Clarice.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 61 on April 20th, 1956 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
