Joseph was born in 1842 in Edmonton, Middlesex.  Joseph's father was Walter Joseph Wheeler and his mother was Emma Jennings.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Wheeler and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were William Jennings and Elizabeth. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Joseph Arthur, Frank, Walter, Edward, Elizabeth and Emma.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
