Matthew was born in 1815 in Darton, Yorkshire.  Matthew's father was Thomas Ledger and his mother was Elizabeth. He had a brother and a sister, named Sidney and Emma.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 57 in 1872 in Barnsley.
