Robert was born in 1843 in Treuddyn, Flintshire, Wales.  Robert's father was Edward Edwards and his mother was Margaret Roberts.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Edwards and Margaret. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Samuel, Thomas, George, Stephen, Edwin, Mary and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 58 in 1901.
