John was born in 1805 in Whitton, Lincolnshire.  John's father was Ambrose Bullevent and his mother was Mary Robinson.  His paternal grandparents were Ambrose Bullevent and Catherine Cottingham; his maternal grandparents were John Robinson and Elizabeth Hill. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, Henry, George, Thomas, James, Ambrose, Catherine, Mary and Sarah.  He was the eighth oldest of the ten children.
