James Henry MADDEN III

The funeral took place on May 18th, 2010 in Johnson City United Methodist Church, Ranshaw, PA and was arranged by James Kell Funeral Home.   COAL TOWNSHIP — James Henry Madden III, 89, of 1607 W. Independence St., passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010, cared for and surrounded by his loving family. He was a patient at Shamokin Area Community Hospital for a short period of time.
  
  He was born Jan. 15, 1921 in Brady, a son of the late James H. II and Sarah (Boyd) Madden. He was married on Sept. 16, 1955, in St. Joseph Church, Coal Township, to Mary Catherine (Richardson) Madden who preceded him on Oct. 17, 1991.
  
  Jim was a 1938 graduate of Coal Township High School.
  
  He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps. He served as a "Belly Gunner" on 38 successful bomber missions over Germany.
  
  A former coal miner, Jim later worked as a correctional officer and then as a counselor at the Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary.
  
  Jim was an avid fisherman and hunter. His greatest passion and joy in life were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a loyal fan and admirer of the Shamokin Area High School Lady Indians basketball team and was affectionately known as "Grandpa" to all the players.
  
  He was a member of Johnson City United Methodist Church, Ranshaw and the Brady Fire Company, Ranshaw.
  
  He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Ginny D'Angelo, and James H. IV and Carol Madden; one daughter, Kathy Bernas; nine grandchildren, Christin E. Bernas-Lindenmuth, Angela, Robert and Nicole Bernas, Jessica and Corrine D'Angelo, and Mary, James V and Nathan Madden; seven great-grandchildren, Autumn Breslin, Levi and Summer Reigle, David and Luke Wengrenovich, Jordan Persing and Victoria Lindenmuth.
  
  Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the James Kelley Funeral Home, 1001 W. Arch St., Coal Township and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Johnson City United Methodist Church, 200 Main St., Ranshaw, where the funeral follows at 10 with the Rev. Beverly Petrovich officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg.
