Maria Isabel was born on September 26th, 1910 in Guanape.  Maria Isabel's father was Jose Maria Barrios Itriago and her mother is Gertrudis Armas Itriago.  Her paternal grandparents are Buenaventura Barrios Bustillos and Micaela Itriago Armas; her maternal grandfather was Calixto Vicente De Armas Madurera and her maternal grandmother is María Trinidad Itriago Dominguez. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Juan Bautista, Jose María, María Ernestina, Maria Gertrudis, Maria Trinidad, Maria Margarita, Maria Evangelina and María Rosa.  She is the eighth oldest of the nine children. She had a half-brother named Ubaldo.
