    In the Family Histor:  Early New York Families, 1600s-199s
    Family History of N Y, Vol. II, New York Family Histories, Page 210:
    "Hubbard Skidmore was a desce ndant of one of the Norman captains who
    came with William the Conqueror, and fought in the battle of Senlac
    (known as Hastings), whose names are celebrate d on the Roll of the Battle
    Abbey and is there inscribed "Sent Scudemore," (S aint)  The name was
    variously written D'Escudamore, Escudamore, Scudamore, an d finally
    Skidmore.  Sir Godfrey de Eskidmore, in the time of William the
    C onqueror, was undoubtedly "Sent Scudemore," as Domesday Book says,
    "Godefridu s Escudor (Eskidmore) was taxed three shillings a hide for his
    four hides, or 640 acres of land, in the time of William the Conqueror."
    "Thomas Scudamore" (Skidmore), the first of his family to come to
    America, was of Cambridge, in New England, and was from Westenter, County
    Gloucester.  He embarked onboard the ship Planter, Nicolas Trarice,
    Master, Arpil 2nd 1635, with John Winthrop , Jr., Governor of Connectticut
    (son of John Winthrop, Governor of Massachuse tts), and landed at
    Plymouth, Massachusetts.  He was with John Winthrop, Jr., at the
    settlement of Laybrook, at the mouth of the Connecticut, as one of th e
    founders of the Colony of Connecticut, and bre intimate relations towards
    the Governor.  His son, John Skidmore, was born at Cambridge,
    Massachusetts, April 11, 1643, descended from whom was Zophar Skidmore, a
    solider in the Re veolutionary army.  Zophar Skidmore, born 1731, father
    of Captain Hubbard Ski dmore, married, December 8, 1766, Mary Titus, born
    in 1747, died January 30, 1799, and they had children:  Hubbard mentioned
    above; Elizabeth, born Octobe r 16, 1769; Susannah, born March 14, 1772;
    Mary born May 26, 1774; John born, November 11, 1776; Samuel, born
    October 8, 1778; Zophar born April 6, 1781; Jonas born July 19, 1783;
    Salomon born May 10, 1785; Hannah, born October 17, 1 788; and Richard,
    born August 24, 1791.

    Thomas is listed as a blacksmith, of Westerleigh, near Bristol England,
    sent over cattle in 1636 for John Winthrop.  Came in 1639 and settled in
    C ambridge, Mass.
    1) He first married Ellen______,
    2) then married Joanna, wido w of Nathaniel Baldwin, previously widow of
    Richard Westcott.  Withrop in 166 7 referred to her as aged 55, wife of
    Thomas Skidmore of Fairfield, and mothe r of the wife of John Weed of

    The will of Thomas of Fairfield, 20 April 1684, proved December 8, 1684; wife Sarah, all Est. for life; at her decease, equally to my grandchild John Higby that married my wife's daughter, and to my grandchild John Skidmore.  His widow swore to the Inv. 15 Nov. 1684, but on 8 Dec. "Sara is alsoe within a fortnight after her husbands deceas alsoe taken away p death."

    According to the Local Families and Histories of Connecticut, 1600s-1800s, Families of Fairfield, Vol I, Surenames, R-S, Page 564, Thomas is listed as a blacksmith, of Westerleigh, near Bristol England, sent over cattle in 1636 for John Winthrop.  Came in 1639 and settled in Cambridge, Mass.
    1) He first married Ellen______,
    2) then married Joanna, widow of Nathaniel Baldwin, previously widow of Richard Westcott.  Withrop in 1667 referred to her as aged 55, wife of Thomas Skidmore of Fairfield, and mother of the wife of John Weed of Stamfor; and also stated that she was sister of the wife of Robert Sanford of Hartford.
    3) Thomas again married after 1672, Sarah, widow first of Edward Treadwell, second of Henry Whelpley, and third of Ralph Keeler.  She died late in 1684.
    The will of Thomas of Fairfield, 20 April 1684, proved December 8, 1684; wife Sarah, all Est. for life; at her decease, equally to my grandchild John Higby that married my wife's daughter, and to my grandchild John Skidmore.  His widow swore to the Inv. 15 Nov. 1684, but on 8 Dec. "Sara is alsoe within a fortnight after her husbands deceas alsoe taken away p death."

    "Hubbard Skidmore was a desce ndant of one of the Norman captains who
    came with William the Conqueror, and fought in the battle of Senlac
    (known as Hastings), whose names are celebrate d on the Roll of the Battle
    Abbey and is there inscribed "Sent Scudemore," (S aint)  The name was
    variously written D'Escudamore, Escudamore, Scudamore, an d finally
    Skidmore.  Sir Godfrey de Eskidmore, in the time of William the
    C onqueror, was undoubtedly "Sent Scudemore," as Domesday Book says,
    "Godefridu s Escudor (Eskidmore) was taxed three shillings a hide for his
    four hides, or 640 acres of land, in the time of William the Conqueror."
    "Thomas Scudamore" (Skidmore), the first of his family to come to
    America, was of Cambridge, in New England, and was from Westenter, County
    Gloucester.  He embarked onboard the ship Planter, Nicolas Trarice,
    Master, Arpil 2nd 1635, with John Winthrop , Jr., Governor of Connectticut
    (son of John Winthrop, Governor of Massachuse tts), and landed at
    Plymouth, Massachusetts.  He was with John Winthrop, Jr., at the
    settlement of Laybrook, at the mouth of the Connecticut, as one of th e
    founders of the Colony of Connecticut, and bre intimate relations towards
    the Governor.  His son, John Skidmore, was born at Cambridge,
    Massachusetts, April 11, 1643, descended from whom was Zophar Skidmore, a
    solider in the Re veolutionary army.  Zophar Skidmore, born 1731, father
    of Captain Hubbard Ski dmore, married, December 8, 1766, Mary Titus, born
    in 1747, died January 30, 1799, and they had children:  Hubbard mentioned
    above; Elizabeth, born Octobe r 16, 1769; Susannah, born March 14, 1772;
    Mary born May 26, 1774; John born, November 11, 1776; Samuel, born
    October 8, 1778; Zophar born April 6, 1781; Jonas born July 19, 1783;
    Salomon born May 10, 1785; Hannah, born October 17, 1 788; and Richard,
    born August 24, 1791.
