Her paternal grandparents were James Mckinney Houston and Martha Davis; her maternal grandfather is Sweat and her maternal grandmother was Caldonise Callie Massengale. She had four brothers and four sisters, named John Leverne "Vernon", Herman, Norman, Alton Leo, Euphie Mae, Minnie, Ester and Ruby. She is the second youngest of the nine children.-
