His paternal grandparents are Samuel William Byrd and Phoebe Laymance; his maternal grandfather is Miller. He had three brothers and a sister, named Samuel Given, Robert "Bob", Jessie and Martha. He was the second youngest of the five children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Elliott Alex "Aleck" and Susie E. He died at the age of 85 in 1966.-
