Edward's father was James Iverson Boswell and his mother was Celonia Elizabeth Chenault. His paternal grandfather was John Boswell and his paternal grandmother is Catherine "Kitty" Simpson. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Marcellus W, Richard Simpson, Virginia Angeline, Eunice John, Susan E.V, Sarah Jane "Sally" and Ella. He had seven half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Charles D, Walter Malachi, Jesse Bruce, Henry Myers, Levi Cummins, John Christopher, James E, Mary Elizabeth "Betty", Anna Keyes, Martha A "Matt" and Isabella Catherine.-
