John was born in 1626 in Storiths, Hazlewood, Skipton, Yorkshire, England.  John's father was Private Private and his mother was Mary Catterson.  His paternal grandparents were Christopher Petyt and Unknown (Petyt).  He had five brothers and seven sisters, named William, William, William, Henry, Sylvester, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, Mary, Isabel, Elizabeth and Anne.  He was the oldest of the thirteen children.
