Thomas was born in 1813 in Darley, Menwith, Hampsthwaite, Yorkshire, England.1   Thomas' father was Thomas Petty and his mother was Elizabeth (Petty).  He had a brother and a sister, named Thompson and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the three children.
