John was born in 1857 in Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland, England.1   John's father was George Petty and his mother was Ann (Petty).  His paternal grandparents were John Petty and Ann (Petty).  He had two sisters named Elizabeth and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He had a half-sister named Hannah.
